A Brief Closeup of Wild Bees
Out in the yard today I found something of interest. The camera is a little bit shakey but I did have a couple of curious bees walking along my fingers at the time. Thanks for watching and blessed bee!😊

Would you like to see how our local fishing hole looks these days? I will be the first to share the the good folks of Shoal and the surrounding community are working to correct things, but it seems like we still have a long way to go. August 1 in the Bears Den Chili Pepper Garden
Переглядів 6112 роки тому
Hey there fellow pepper lovers and welcome back into the Bears Den garden! The chilis in here are actually doing quite well so far, still no aphids to be found, with great growth rates and the promise of quite a harvest coming on the Matchbox variety already! If the other hot & super hot peppers give me numbers like that then it won't even matter that I was only able to transplant 6 of them tod...
Growing Duckweed in the Thistle Powered Swamp Water Garden
Переглядів 6782 роки тому
So growing duckweed in fetid swamp water, powered by all that thistle that grows around our yard, seems to be a REALLY good idea! If you take a look at the last duckweed post you'll see that I was expecting it to take several more days before the top would be covered but as we can tell ... it filled up early. Since duckweed is such a handy goldfish, chicken or even human food I imagine there wi...
The Chili Peppers and the New Plan
Переглядів 1552 роки тому
Growing chili peppers, or at least trying to grow them, has become something of a way of life for me over the last decade or so and this year is no different. Previous attempts to create my indoor chili pepper paradise and ended in tragedy with the aphids easily winning a long running siege by hiding out in the shag carpet. Carpet's gone, aphids gone ... it's time to grow! The few plants I have...
Hugelculture Raised Bed Berry Garden Review
Переглядів 1282 роки тому
So we've had this hugelculture berry bed going for a few years now and it's time for a bit of a review. While it is a fairly simple style of raised bed garden to create, it does take some effort compared to a few easier methods however that effort pays big dividends when it comes to keeping your plants well watered in the heat of summer! When we built our hugel bed we used up a bunch of old bra...
Using Canada Thistle to Grow Duckweed
Переглядів 2112 роки тому
Out in my garden, I've found that thistle can be a HUGE issue after the ground has been heavily worked or tilled. While it may look quite beautiful to some when it goes to flower, that is the last thing you want for your garden! Once it takes over, thistle can be very hard to remove but if you can find a use for it then that's not really a problem anymore, is it? My use is to grow duckweed with...
Creating New Gooseberry Bushes
Переглядів 4,3 тис.2 роки тому
Thanks for stopping by to check out this simple way to get rooted gooseberry cuttings every time! It's easy and all you really need is some soil and a rock to get it started. Basically we are just copying natures way of propagating these wonderful berry bushes, so it's evolved to work this way and that makes it easy to quickly create as many gooseberries as you want or need for your permacultur...
Garden Update 6-19-2022
Переглядів 2052 роки тому
Hello everybody and welcome back to a good old fashioned Sunday in the Gardens! Been awhile since we've had a proper one of those ... Since most of my garden has been planting rows of seeds this year, as compared to random plantings of whatever pre-starts happened to survive, there has been little to share but it looks like we are finally starting to get something showing above ground! The row ...
Aloe Vera and Cold Water Aquaponics
Переглядів 7252 роки тому
Aloe vera, what a delightfully useful plant! Over the winter my basement aquaponic garden has been working away at rooting some aloe pups for me and I am quite impressed with how well it has done, all things considered ... There's under a dozen feeder fish still swimming around in the tank, the basement air temperature is more than a little chilly year round and aloe are, after all, something o...

I only grow determinate cherries, they are easiest to grow and blossom end rot has never been a problem, they also start flowering earlier and therefore the fruits ripen earlier.

CatchMasters are great traps if you know what you're doing. Wear gloves to keep human scent off, and leave it alone for about a week to allow rodents to become familiar with it.

4:39 What about the tome when you are not transferring the water up like when you are sleeping? Do you turn on the electric pump at night or will the fish be fine without 24-hour aeration?

To save time, try pre sprouting in sandwich bags or soil mix about 6 to 8 wks ahead of time...in doors. Also it does just fine in doors.
